Dolomite peaks in the South Tyrol region near Bolzano

Bolzano

The Area

Bolzano (Bozen in German) is the vibrant capital of South Tyrol, a city of around 100,000 people where Italian and Austrian cultures meet in a genuinely distinctive way. It sits at the confluence of three valleys at 262m above sea level and enjoys one of the warmest climates in the Alps.

What to do in Bolzano

  • The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology: home to Ötzi the Iceman, the 5,300-year-old glacier mummy discovered in 1991. One of the most remarkable archaeological finds of the 20th century and a must-visit.
  • The old town and Walther Square: the beautiful Gothic cathedral, the medieval arcaded streets of the Lauben, and the lively central piazza.
  • Bolzano's markets: the daily fruit and vegetable market is one of the best in northern Italy, overflowing with local produce, Speck, cheeses and wines.
  • Renon plateau (Ritten): take the cable car up from the city centre to the cool, pine-scented plateau above Bolzano for walks and views.
  • Maretsch Castle and Runkelstein Castle: two well-preserved medieval castles within easy reach of the city centre.

Eating in Bolzano

Bolzano's restaurant scene is excellent and genuinely bilingual. You will find everything from trattorias serving Bolognese and fresh pasta to Gasthaus serving Knödel, Speckbrettl and Törggelen platters. The weekly farmers market is the best place to stock up on local Speck, cheese, apple juice and wine.

Bolzano is 30 minutes by car from Verano.
