Merano
Merano (Meran in German) is one of the most elegant towns in the Alps, sitting in a sheltered valley at just 325m above sea level. Its mild microclimate made it a fashionable 19th-century spa resort, attracting Habsburg aristocracy and European nobility. This history left behind a beautiful legacy of art nouveau promenades, grand hotels, and manicured gardens. Today it is a relaxed, prosperous town that combines Italian warmth with Tyrolean tradition.
What to do in Merano
- Trauttmansdorff Gardens: 12 hectares of spectacular terraced gardens with over 80 themed sections, panoramic views, and a Museum of Tourism. One of Italy's most visited gardens.
- The Thermal Baths (Terme Merano): a modern spa complex with 25 indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and wellness treatments. Perfect for an afternoon or full day.
- The Tappeiner Promenade: a scenic 4km path above the town through Mediterranean vegetation, with views over the rooftops to the mountains.
- Merano's old town: covered shopping arcades (Lauben), a Gothic cathedral, castle, and excellent restaurants and wine bars.
- Merano 2000: the ski and hiking plateau above the town, reachable by gondola year-round.
