Winter
Winter in Verano is peaceful and beautiful. The plateau receives reliable snowfall from December through March, and the surrounding mountains transform into a classic Alpine winter landscape. It is an ideal base for skiing, snowshoeing, and winter walking, without the crowds or prices of the big Austrian resorts.
Skiing at Merano 2000
The nearest ski area is Merano 2000, just 15 minutes by car. It is a well-maintained, family-friendly resort with:
- 40km of pistes across all levels
- A gondola from Merano city centre (handy if you want to leave the car)
- Snow-sure conditions from December to mid-April
- Ski rental available at the base station
- Far less crowded than bigger resorts. You will rarely queue.
Other winter activities
- Snowshoeing directly from the apartment: the plateau trails are perfect under snow
- Winter walking on cleared paths around the village
- Cross-country skiing on the Tschögglberg plateau
- Day trips to larger ski areas: Ortler/Sulden (1.5 hours), Val Gardena (1 hour), Schnalstal glacier (1 hour)
Practical winter note
Snow chains or winter tyres are recommended if driving up to Verano between November and March. The road is well-maintained but can be icy after fresh snowfall. Alternatively, use the cable car from Burgstall in the valley.
