Alpine meadows and fields around Verano in summer, South Tyrol

Hiking in South Tyrol from the Apartment Door

Back to blog

One of the things guests mention most often in their reviews is how immediately the hiking starts. There is no drive to a trailhead, no car park to navigate. The marked paths begin a few minutes' walk from the apartment, climbing into the meadows and forests of the Tschögglberg plateau from the moment you leave the front door.

Texel Nature Park

Verano sits at the lower edge of Naturpark Texel — the largest nature park in the Alps by area. The park covers 33,000 hectares of Alpine terrain above Merano, rising from wooded slopes at 1,000 metres to rocky peaks above 3,500 metres. It is largely car-free and remarkably uncommercialised compared to more famous hiking destinations in the region.

The park has over 200 kilometres of marked trails. From Verano, most are accessible within 30 minutes of leaving the apartment, either on foot or with a short drive to a cable car station. Trail maps are available from the tourist office in Verano and can be downloaded from the park website.

Walks to try

Tschögglberg plateau walk (easy, 2–3 hours)

A circular route across the plateau above Verano, passing through flower meadows with continuous views south across the Adige valley and towards the Dolomites. Suitable for families with children.

Merano High Trail — Vigiljoch section (moderate, 4–5 hours)

A section of the famous Meraner Höhenweg, one of the classic long-distance walks of South Tyrol. The trail traverses the south-facing hillside above Merano with panoramic views throughout. Take the cable car up from Lana or Merano and walk back.

Ifinger peak (3 hours from the upper cable car, challenging)

The highest point above the ski area, at 2,581 metres. The ascent from the Merano 2000 area takes around three hours on marked trails with some steep sections. The 360-degree summit view — from the Ötztal Alps in the north to the Dolomites in the south — is exceptional.

Texel ridge hike (full day, challenging)

A demanding full-day walk along the ridge that forms the northern boundary of the nature park. Best done in clear conditions and with good footwear. The views into both the Texel and Adige valleys are among the finest in South Tyrol.

When to visit

The main hiking season runs from late May to mid-October. June and September tend to offer the best conditions — the meadows are in flower in June, and September brings clear skies, cooler temperatures and far fewer visitors than July and August.

At 1,500 metres, Verano is noticeably cooler than Merano in the valley — comfortable even on the hottest summer days. You will want a layer in the evenings regardless of the month.

After the walk

The apartment has a well-equipped kitchen if you want to cook, or the restaurants in Verano are a short walk away. Merano's thermal baths at Terme Merano are 10 minutes by car — an excellent option for sore legs after a long day on the mountain.
