The Best Base for Skiing Merano 2000
Merano 2000 is one of South Tyrol's most rewarding ski areas — large enough for a serious ski holiday, but without the crowds and queues you find at bigger resorts like Madonna di Campiglio or the Dolomiti Superski circuit. Our apartment in Verano puts you just 15 minutes from the lifts.
About Merano 2000
The resort sits between 1,600 and 2,650 metres above sea level, with 45 kilometres of marked pistes, 14 lifts and reliable snow cover from December through to late March. There are runs for every level — long, wide blue pistes for beginners and families, red runs for intermediate skiers, and a handful of technical black descents.
What makes Merano 2000 unusual is how uncrowded it stays, even in peak weeks. It does not feature on the major tour operator itineraries, which means the slopes are almost empty compared to the bigger names. Lift queues at peak time are rarely more than five minutes.
The resort is also part of the broader Ortler Skiarena pass, which covers 12 resorts and 200 kilometres of skiing across South Tyrol, Trentino and the Stelvio area. Staying in Verano means you are well placed to spend a day at any of them.
Why Verano is the perfect ski base
From the apartment, the drive to the Merano 2000 car park takes around 15 minutes. There is no need to book shuttle buses or navigate town-centre traffic — you drive up the mountain road in the morning and back down in the afternoon. Free parking at the apartment means you are not paying resort car park fees on top.
After a day on the slopes, you return to a proper apartment — a fully equipped kitchen to cook dinner, a balcony with views across the snow-covered valley, and the peace and quiet of a small mountain village. Verano has its own restaurants if you want to eat out, and the town of Merano is 10 minutes away for a wider choice.
The apartment sleeps up to four guests, making it ideal for families or a group of friends sharing the cost. At direct booking rates, the nightly price per person is comparable to budget hotel accommodation — but with far more space, a kitchen and a view that no hotel in Merano can match.
Snowshoeing and other winter activities
If you want a day off the skis, snowshoe trails start directly from the village. The Tschögglberg plateau has a well-marked network of winter walking routes through the forests and meadows above Verano, suitable for all fitness levels. Cross-country ski tracks are also accessible nearby.
Merano itself is worth an afternoon in winter — the Christmas market runs through December, the thermal baths at Terme Merano are open year-round, and the old town is pleasant even in cold weather.
